Sue Bonzell:

This is Up N Country on 93.7, The Bull. It’s powered by the vLiveCast. I’m your host, Sue Bonzell. Let’s get this show started. He calls himself young country with an old soul, and he has a new EP out. I’m excited that Jackson Chase is with us today, hey Jackson.

Jackson Chase.:

Hey, how are you?

Sue Bonzell:

I am great. I am excited that you are here today in our studio, here in Nashville at Up N Country. I got to see you play at the Station Inn, that’s where I saw you the first time.

Jackson Chase.:

Yes, ma’am.

Sue Bonzell:

You got up on stage, you were a guest and who did you… Tell us about playing at the Station Inn.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh, it was just awesome. I got up, I got to play with Carl Jackson, who used to tour with Glen Campbell for about 12 years. Then, I also sang with Larry Cordle, who wrote Highway 40 Blues and we actually sang Highway 40 Blues.

Sue Bonzell:

He sang Highway 40 Blues.

Jackson Chase.:

Which was awesome.

Sue Bonzell:

Killed it.

Jackson Chase.:

Thank you. I appreciate it.

Sue Bonzell:

I mean, what did that feel like sitting next to the guy who wrote the song, who’s a legend, obviously Highway 40 Blues, old country? How did that feel?

Jackson Chase.:

It was crazy. It was awesome. Stuff like that.

Sue Bonzell:

I loved how, when you were ready to play, I think you were going to play another song and you went to Carl and you’re like, “Hey, can I take your guitar?”

Jackson Chase.:

Oh yeah, I just asked, because usually there’s banjo in it, I just said, “Hey, you want to play banjo on it? I got to play his guitar.

Sue Bonzell:

Yeah. You grabbed his guitar and he played the banjo. Oh, it was…

Jackson Chase.:

I believe it was like a 1957 Martin or something like that.

Sue Bonzell:

Oh, my goodness.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh, it was, it was awesome.

Sue Bonzell:

That is so cool.

Jackson Chase.:

It sounded great.

Sue Bonzell:

That is… It was a fun show. The Station Inn kind of known for a little more of the classic country, the bluegrass.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

Now, you are how old?

Jackson Chase.:

I’m 15 and I turned 16 at the end of this month.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay. This is a very talented young man. Now, the style, explain your style of country music.

Jackson Chase.:

Well, if I had to compare it to anyone, I’d have to say probably around George Strait kind of stuff. A lot of fiddle, steel guitar, different stuff like that. I listen to a lot of old stuff, I just kind of go with what I want to sing and we just do it. I also do play bluegrass too.

Sue Bonzell:

I was going to say.

Jackson Chase.:

Yes.

Sue Bonzell:

There’s some bluegrass, some influence in there. Some gospel a little bit.

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah. Yeah. I have a bluegrass band back in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and we play at different festivals across Alabama and some in Mississippi, we played at a good bit of places.

Sue Bonzell:

I think, okay, so this is really cool. Here you are. You’re about to be 16, you’re young.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

You were playing some traditional country and I think that there’s a lot of people, I talk to a lot of people, that say, “Oh, that new country, that pop, that’s not country.”

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

A lot of people have that comment. You’re kind of bringing back that old country feel.

Jackson Chase.:

Yes. Ma’am.

Sue Bonzell:

Yeah.

Jackson Chase.:

Trying my best.

Sue Bonzell:

You’re doing a great job. Now, the new album.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

You’ve got a song called Wild and Blue that you did with John Anderson.

Jackson Chase.:

Yes. Ma’am.

Sue Bonzell:

How did that happen? I mean, John Anderson, classic country.

Jackson Chase.:

We reached out to him a few months ago and we asked him if he’d want to do a song. We sent him some videos of me and he liked my sound and liked how I did traditional country. We decided to do Wild and Blue, which was his first number one. We just kind of went to Nashville and recorded it with him, which was like one of the best experiences of my life. Just hanging out with him and hearing him record and talking to him. I like to tell people that talking to him, was like talking to my grandpa.

Sue Bonzell:

Oh, that’s cool.

Jackson Chase.:

He was easy to talk to.

Sue Bonzell:

Yeah. He seems like a really cool guy. Now, you also have a song, is that also on the album with John Schneider?

Jackson Chase.:

Yes. Bo Duke.

Sue Bonzell:

There you go. Right? Exactly.

Jackson Chase.:

Dukes of Hazard fans out there.

Sue Bonzell:

We love him.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

He also is country music musician.

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

How did that all take place?

Jackson Chase.:

Well, about a year ago or so, he actually tweeted, “What in the world has happened to country music?”

Sue Bonzell:

Oh.

Jackson Chase.:

I kind of thought, kind of agreed with him, “What happened to country music?” I wrote a song about it and me and dad sent it to him, and he liked it and he just said, “Well, why don’t you, why can’t I do it with you?” He just hopped on the track and yeah, it’s actually an original too, it’s an original.

Sue Bonzell:

Really.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

Okay, good. Okay. How many of the songs on the EP are your original songs?

Jackson Chase.:

We split it six and six.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

Six originals and six covers and we kind of changed up the covers a little bit to make them different. We were originally going to do more originals, but we met with actually Dolly Parton’s producer.

Sue Bonzell:

Wow.

Jackson Chase.:

When we were at Dark Horse Studio, in Nashville. That’s where John recorded his part, or John Anderson.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

He said for the first album, since you want to appeal to bunch of audiences, which would appeal to, me singing traditional would appeal to older country.

Sue Bonzell:

Sure, of course.

Jackson Chase.:

Older fans and then also since I’m younger, to the younger people. Singing six covers of older songs, kind of makes the older country fans think, “Oh, he likes our stuff. He’s he’s pretty good.”

Sue Bonzell:

Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

Then, the younger people probably haven’t heard it before. So they think-

Sue Bonzell:

Right. It sounds new to them.

Jackson Chase.:

It sounds new to them. Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

I love it. I love it. Now, you say you’re influences are George Strait, Keith Whitley, of course, John Anderson.

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

Hank Williams and Alabama.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh, yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

Who’s your like all time favorite?

Jackson Chase.:

If I had to listen to one person for the rest of my life, it’d have to probably be George Strait, just because he’s got like 60 number ones.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay. Yeah.

Jackson Chase.:

That’s hard to beat. I like Merle Haggard, I play Keith Whitley, but I probably have to say George Strait. I probably listen to him the most.

Sue Bonzell:

Now, okay. Thankfully George, still around, still out touring, still out playing.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

Is that, would that be your number one guy to go open for or play a song with?

Jackson Chase.:

Oh, if I could open for him, that would be crazy. I don’t know, but I wanted to go to one of his shows a few months back, but we looked how much the tickets were, the cheapest tickets…

Sue Bonzell:

I know. Well, that’s because he’s a legend, right?

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

He’s a legend.

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

Well, you’re going to get there. We’re just going to put it out there.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

Somebody might see this, might know George and especially-

Jackson Chase.:

Oh yeah. Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

When you hear his sound, when you hear his sound, you’re going to go, “Ah, that is a good combination for George Strait,” I think. I think, I think. What are the plans for you coming up in the next year or so? Since you’re young, just turning 16, you got to get the license and all that stuff.

Jackson Chase.:

Well, we’re getting some more shows to do, some more acoustic shows, just me and I’m actually doing a show in Tuscaloosa. Kind of a release show for everyone in my area to come to and if you want to come, drive on down there.

Sue Bonzell:

Drive on down to Tuscaloosa.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh yeah. Drive down to Tuscaloosa. But yeah, we’re so releasing a single this month, March 29th, it’s an original. Then, one next month.

Sue Bonzell:

Wow.

Jackson Chase.:

We’re releasing one single each month, leading up to the album. We’re going to release four singles. The album should be coming out in June, July. June or July.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

Something like that.

Sue Bonzell:

It’s going to be a really big summer.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh yeah. I’m excited about releasing it and yeah, it’s going to be really fun.

Sue Bonzell:

You get to do all these things. You’re traveling around and everything.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

Are you missing school? I mean, I mean, you know.

Jackson Chase.:

I miss school every now and then. Every few days, but my school’s really, they don’t really care that much about me missing. I mean, they support me so they won’t like… They ain’t going, they’ll excuse my absences.

Sue Bonzell:

Right.

Jackson Chase.:

We usually get someone to write it.

Sue Bonzell:

Yeah.

Jackson Chase.:

Or write the excuse letter.

Sue Bonzell:

The excuse letter.

Jackson Chase.:

The excuse letter.

Sue Bonzell:

I used to write those, when I was a kid. I wrote my own. You ever done that?

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-mm (negative).

Sue Bonzell:

See, his dad’s here. No, he’s a good kid. Well, we are going to have Jackson play a song for us and then we’re going to play a little game. It’s a game that I started here on Up N Country, called Truth and Truth. We’re going to have fun. We’ve got that coming right up.

Jackson Chase.:

This song is called Falling in Love With You and it’s releasing on March 29th. (singing).

Sue Bonzell:

All right. That is Jackson Chase’s new song, Falling in Love With You. That was awesome. Well done. Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

Thank you.

Sue Bonzell:

You ready to play a little game with me?

Jackson Chase.:

Yes.

Sue Bonzell:

He’s, I think he’s a little bit worried. He’s like, “What is she talking about?”

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah. We’ll se what happens.

Sue Bonzell:

Well, it’s all on you, because I’m going to make you pick your own questions.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh.

Sue Bonzell:

This is a game called Truth or Truth. We’re not going to do the Truth or Dare.

Jackson Chase.:

Truth or Truth.

Sue Bonzell:

Truth or Truth. We’re not leaving our seats. We’re going to stay right here. I’ve got some questions. This is, I usually do Truth or Truth with my guests. Jackson here about to turn 16, so we’re doing the teen version. It’s a little tamed down. Yeah.

Jackson Chase.:

Okay, yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

I got to tame it down just a little. Don’t worry. Don’t worry. It’ll be safe. This is safe space. All right. Pick your question, Jackson.

Jackson Chase.:

Okay. Do I say the question?

Sue Bonzell:

Say the question.

Jackson Chase.:

Have you ever been made fun of at school? Yes, I have been made fun of, but I mostly, it’s just my friends joking around.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

Usually, usually it’s just them joking around or maybe some dude’s girlfriend will like my singing and they’ll get mad.

Sue Bonzell:

Oh, because I’m sure that the girls are like, “Oh.”

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah, yeah. Yep.

Sue Bonzell:

You know you get cuter when you’re a musician. That’s a fact.

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah. Been told that a couple times.

Sue Bonzell:

See, but you haven’t really been like bullied or hasn’t been like anything terrible.

Jackson Chase.:

Not really.

Sue Bonzell:

Most of your friends just giving you bad time?

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay. Fair enough. Well, good. I’m glad that you haven’t had the bullying thing. That’s a good thing. All right. I’ll trade you. I’ll take that one. You get to pick another one.

Jackson Chase.:

[inaudible 00:13:20]. Oh, what is your all time favorite snack food?

Sue Bonzell:

That’s a teen question for sure.

Jackson Chase.:

That, I’d have to say Gushers. I love Gushers, that’s the gummy.

Sue Bonzell:

Gushers.

Jackson Chase.:

Gushers are so good. I’ll eat them all the time, or like Doritos. That’s all I eat at lunch. Instead of the lunch food we have at school, I’ll just get, they have bags of Doritos. I’ll get like that, usually.

Sue Bonzell:

Gushers and Doritos. Okay. We’re going to put this on the writer for his backstage treats, when you’re on tour with George Strait.

Jackson Chase.:

Little basket of Gushers. There we go.

Sue Bonzell:

Exactly. Exactly.

Jackson Chase.:

Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Sue Bonzell:

We’re setting the stage right now for you. We’re going to get you all dialed in. This is going… We’re going to make it so easy for you.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh yeah. I’m getting excited now.

Sue Bonzell:

His Gushers and on tour with George Strait. This is, okay, hashtag goals, right? I can say that?

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah, hashtag goals.

Sue Bonzell:

Does that make me sound old? Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose? I’m going to be honest, right where I live now. Tuscaloosa. I love Tuscaloosa. I love it, because there’s Lake Tuscaloosa. You can go on the lake with some friends and there’s a, it’s a little kind of… It’s, I don’t know what kind of city it is, it’s not a big city. I don’t know if it’s… It’s a little smaller than a medium city.

Sue Bonzell:

Do you-

Jackson Chase.:

It’s just big enough for me.

Speaker 3:

College town.

Jackson Chase.:

Huh?

Sue Bonzell:

College town.

Jackson Chase.:

College town.

Sue Bonzell:

College town. Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

You know a lot of people there?

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

Because, you, I’m sure… How long’s your family been there?

Jackson Chase.:

I’ve lived there my whole life. My dad moved there… When did you move there?

Speaker 3:

Eighth grade.

Jackson Chase.:

Eighth grade.

Sue Bonzell:

Eighth grade. Okay.

Jackson Chase.:

A long time ago, like in the 1800s or something like that.

Sue Bonzell:

Spoken like a true teen. Well, do you want to do one more?

Jackson Chase.:

Sure.

Sue Bonzell:

Okay. One more. These are easy, right?

Jackson Chase.:

Oh yeah.

Sue Bonzell:

These are easy.

Jackson Chase.:

Taking a risk with this.

Sue Bonzell:

This is easy. Come on.

Jackson Chase.:

Can I recommend any TV shows or YouTube videos?

Sue Bonzell:

What are you watching right now? What’s your, what’s your thing right now?

Jackson Chase.:

Actually, right now, on Netflix, I’m watching Fuller House.

Sue Bonzell:

Oh, are you?

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah. I don’t know, why I just been watching it and then-

Sue Bonzell:

I love it.

Jackson Chase.:

I don’t know. I kind of like the Avengers and the Marvel stuff they do now. YouTube videos.

Sue Bonzell:

Not really into any YouTube too much?

Jackson Chase.:

Not really. I mean, sometimes I’ll watch live shows of different singers. Live.

Sue Bonzell:

George Strait.

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah, George Strait.

Sue Bonzell:

That’s what we’re going for. Well, I want to thank you for playing the game Truth or Truth.

Jackson Chase.:

Oh, yeah, it was fun.

Sue Bonzell:

It was mostly painless. We found out a little more details about Jackson Chase.

Jackson Chase.:

And the Gushers.

Sue Bonzell:

About the Gushers, so if you ever see him at a concert, you’re going to go see him, bring him some Gushers and Doritos. Okay?

Jackson Chase.:

Yeah. That can be the ticket to get in.

Sue Bonzell:

That’s it, right? Exactly. I love it. I love it. Jackson, I want to thank you so much for being here today.

Jackson Chase.:
